Production of bags for recycling collection

Plastisac is an Italian company that has been active for over 40 years in the production of bags for recycling collection.

The parameters to comply with for disposal in the environment

The company produces biodegradable and compostable bags and sacks, suitable for sorted waste collection and other situations where it is necessary to use bags that will be disposed of in the environment, as they comply with the criteria of the relevant European legislation. According to current legislation adopted in Italy, the material used in the production of these bags must comply with certain parameters:

  • Degrade not less than 90% in 6 months if in a carbon dioxide-rich environment.
  • At least 90 % of the mass of the material must consist of fragments smaller than 2 mm.
  • The material must not adversely affect the composting process
  • Heavy metal additives must have a low concentration
  • Comply with the limits set for pH values, salt content, concentration of volatile solids, nitrogen, phosphorus, magnesium and potassium.

The difference between "biodegradable" and "compostable"

The main difference between the two concepts concerns the disposal time of the enclosure, i.e. the bag, into the environment. A "biodegradable" bag takes considerably longer to reabsorb into the environment than a "compostable" bag, which takes about three months when in contact with organic material.
