New reductions in CONAI Environmental Contributions

Plastic Packaging

In an extraordinary market environment, with exceptional prices of recycled material values, it was possible to apply a significant reduction of the CAC for plastics from 1 July 2022 to the end of 2023.

• BAND A1 (rigid and flexible packaging with an effective and consolidated industrial sorting and recycling chain, mainly managed in commerce&industry circuits) the fee goes from 104 €/tonne to 60 €/tonne;
• BAND A2 (rigid and flexible packaging with an effective and consolidated industrial sorting and recycling chian, mainly managed in commerce&industry circuits, but significantly present in urban separate collection) remains at 150 €/tonne;
• BAND B1 (packaging with an effective and consolidated industrial sorting and recycling chain, mainly from the household circuit) goes from 149 €/tonne to 20 €/tonne;
• BAND B2 (other selectable/recyclable packaging from the domestic and/or trade/industrial circuit) reduced from 520 €/tonne to 410 €/tonne;
• BAND C (packaging from experimental sorting/recycling activities or not sortable/recyclable with current technology) from 642 €/tonne to 560 €/tonne.

New Bands from 1 January 2023

In order to support CONAI's commitment to linking environmental contribution values to the actual recyclability and destination circuit, as well as to the ratio of costs and revenues of collection, sorting and recycling activities, a further segmentation of plastic packaging will come into force from 1 January 2023.

The bands that will change will be:

• Band A1, which will be subdivided into A1.1 and A1.2;
• Band B1, which will be subdivided into B1.1 and B1.2 in order to separate PET articles (in B1.2)
• Band B2, which will be divided into 3 new bands (B2.1 - B2.2 - B2.3) depending on the type of material;

The lists of packaging included in the 9 bands will be available on the official CONAI website and the respective values of the Environmental Contribution will be defined in the coming months.
