COMPOSTABLE BAGS

Biodegradable and compostable bags/shoppers can be used for sorted waste collection or in other situations that require the use of products that must be disposed of in the environment. For this reason, a European regulation adopted in Italy also establishes the features that a material must possess in order to be deemed biodegradable or compostable.

• degrade at least 90% in 6 months, if subject to a carbon dioxide rich environment; these values ​​must be tested with the standard method EN 14046 (also called ISO 14855);
• in contact with organic materials for a period of 3 months, the mass of material must consist of at least 90% of fragments smaller than 2 mm; these values ​​must be tested against EN 14045 standard methods;
• the material must not adversely affect the composting process;
• low concentration of heavy metals added to the material;
• pH values ​​within established limits;
• salt content ​​within established limits;
• volatile solids ​​within established limits;
• concentration of nitrogen, phosphorus, magnesium and potassium within established limits.
